I’ve been so busy launching the new website to include homes for sale as a not-for-profit estate agency over the last few months, that I’ve barely had time to look at what’s on the market. Yes, after 12 years of trawling property portals and writing about homes already on the market, I decided to cut out the middleman and list properties myself.
It’s early days, and I’ve just listed my first property—a very nice flat on the Whittington Estate—so we’ll see how it goes. As I only want to list properties I can honestly represent and know enough about, the ratio of properties to Rightmove fees might bankrupt me—who knew it was £1,500 a month to list on Rightmove? If you’re thinking of selling a flat on a modernist estate in London, I’m all ears.
Anyway, I didn’t mean for this to turn into the sales pitch it seems to have become. Back to the matter at hand… Because I can’t help but scratch that itch and see what else is out there, I’ll still do the occasional ‘on the market roundup’, but these will be reserved for paid subscribers only.
Today’s selection is for houses over £1,000,000—daydreams for me, but with the constant rain and January feeling never-ending, I think we could all do with a little escapism.
3-bedroom house
Morden Road
Blackheath
London SE3
£1,000,000
(115.3 sqm —£8,672 per sqm)
A Span house, but not as you know it as this terrace of three-storey houses wasn't designed by Eric Lyons, but by north London architects Andrews, Emerson & Sherlock in c. 1965—possibly because Lyons, then president of RIBA, had too many commitments. The houses were erected on a narrow site between large Victorian villas. They don’t come up very often, and the last one sold in 2021 for £1,162,500. This one is cheaper, but it needs a lot of work. It looks like it has been in the same family for a long time and retains many original details, including the lovely timber staircase, unpainted—hooray! (I’m assuming it’s probably a probate sale as it’s chain-free.)
